Picea Pungens Glauca

Picea Pungens Glauca

(Potted Blue Spruce)

Related to the Norway Spruce this is one of the most attractive Christmas Trees. It has a good natural shape and is distinguished by it's striking blue-green (sometimes almost electric blue) foliage.

It has the distinctive 'pine' scent. It commands attention even without decoration. The needles are very sharp so care needs to be taken with handling it. Like all spruce it needs to be kept well watered to keep it at it's best.

These trees have a very distinctive steel blue colour and are highly scented, ideal for an indoor / outdoor potted Christmas tree.

Sizes:
(2’/3’) - 0.80m/1.00m
(3’/4’) - 1.00m/1.25m

Pine

Pine

Although many people use the word "pine" for any evergreen, true pines bear their needles in bundles called fascicles, not individually along the stem. Depending on the species, the bundle has two, three, or five needles. Two-needle types are more adaptable than three-needle, and three-needle more than five-needle.

Some pines, such as dwarf mugo (P. mugo), have a rounded shape. Many are upright and pyramidal. Some have beautiful bark, such as Scots pine (P. sylvestris).

These trees have been hand pruned to encourage a fuller shape and habit. They probably have the best needle retentive qualities of all Christmas trees.

Lodgepole Pine
These have a superb fragrance, sheared to form dense, conical shapes. Needle retention is excellent.

Scotts Pine
The traditional Pine tree. These are exceptional specimens sheared to form beautiful, dense shapes.

Sizes:

Nordmanniana

Nordmanniana

(Nordmann Fir, Abies nordmanniana)

The Nordmann Fir has gained popularity in recent years due to it's good needle retention qualities and ability to look good throughout the festivities and has become the preffered Christmas Tree. Often described as being non-drop, this is not strictly true, but it will retain it's needles better than Norway Spruce. It has soft, deep green foliage, smooth grey bark and a good triangular shape. It tends to be slightly more open and less dense than Norway. The
needles when crushed give a very aromatic citrus smell.

The trees listed below are of the best quality,
and have been graded to be class (A) Premium.

Picea Abies Frazeri

Picea Abies Frazeri

(Frazers Fir)

These trees have a more compact habit than a Nordman, so they do not need as much space in the house. They also have good needle retention qualities.

The American Dream. The most popular Christmas Tree in the USA. It has dense, highly fragrant foliage and excellent needle retention. Relatively new to the UK, a great alternative to Nordmann. Ideal for those who require a slimmer tree. Notorious for a twist in the leader (where the fairy goes!)

Frasier fir (Abies fraseri) is the "primo" Christmas tree. The needles are singly attached, alternate, sessile and leave a large
round depression when they are removed. The cone is upright, subterminal and disintegrates at maturity. They are slender, spire-like trees with a pointed top.

It has dark green needles that are borne in one plane, something like a feather. There are pronounced white lines beneath and the needles curve upward. They have excellent needle retention and are very fragrant. Native to high mountains in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

(5’/7’) - 1.50m/2.10m

Cut Trees

Cut Trees

(Tradition Trees, Norwegian Spruce, Picea Abies)

The Norway spruce continues to be a popular choice in the UK and is the traditional species for the British Christmas tree. It is the species you will find erected in Trafalgar Square and 10 Downing Street each year. It has the triangular shape, dark green needles, gently drooping branches and a distinctive 'pine' fragrance. It's dense bushy shape is excellent for decorating. It is relatively quick growing which explains it's apparently cheap price compared to other species. It's one slight drawback is that needle retention is not it's strongest point. It does need to be keep well watered and away from direct heat sources to maintain it's quality throughout the Christmas period. If used outdoors there is no problem.
